Themes in children’s ministry are an effective and fun way to teach the Word of God to your students. Here’s a few reasons why:

☑️ Themes help kids understand Biblical principles. When you use a theme that a child relates to, you are speaking their language. For example, if I say to a child “God is omnipotent and omniscient”, they probably won’t understand what that means. But if I am teaching using a Superhero theme and I say “Jesus is more powerful than Superman - He has unlimited power and knows everything!” then the child will be able to easily understand. Themes do not replace the Word, but they can help us teach it.

☑️ Themes can be fun and engaging! This is where you can let the creative juices flow! Themes should serve two purposes: to teach and to engage. A good theme captivates the students’ attention while introducing them to Biblical principles in a fun way. Use visuals when you incorporate a theme - backdrops, videos, graphics, costumes go a long way!

☑️ Themes can teach a “Big Idea” over several weeks. Each week you use a theme, teach different lessons while pointing back to the “Big Idea” or the overarching focus of the series. Introduce a new theme every 2 or 3 months; this gives you plenty of time to teach several lessons within the theme while keeping it fresh. Remember, we’re not trying to compete with the entertainment of the world, we have something they could never re-create, the Word and Spirit of God! Always strive for excellence and pray for God to move and do the rest.

Big Idea - With God, we can live life in color!

You’ve Got Talent! - Talent show/game show theme

Big Idea: We all have a place in God’s Kingdom!
